18- Jeff Davis Memorial
Dive site number 18 – Jeff Davis Memorial is named after Jefferson C. Davis. He was a pioneer in diving medicine and hyperbaric treatment, known for his work on decompression sickness. The dive site on Bonaire is named in his memory, as he passed away here. Davis developed methods to help divers dive more safely and reduce the effects of decompression sickness. He was also involved in the development of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a treatment still widely used today. His research and efforts have made significant contributions to diver safety and medical care worldwide.
The dive site is accessible from both the shore and by boat and is renowned for its peaceful underwater environment. The reef slopes gently, with depths ranging from approximately 6 to 30 meters, making it suitable for both novice and experienced divers.
What makes Jeff Davis Memorial truly special are the numerous cleaning stations, where various cleaner fish and shrimp tend to larger fish—a fascinating natural phenomenon to observe. It’s also a spot where I frequently encounter turtles.
