Mangrove Center
Lac Cai is a peaceful hidden beach on the edge of a large lagoon surrounded by mangrove forests in Bonaire. The calm, shallow water and stunning turquoise-green colors make it a perfect spot for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying nature.
Because it’s still relatively undiscovered, the beach is often quiet—especially during weekdays—offering beautiful views of the lagoon and mangroves. Visitors often combine a trip here with kayaking through the mangroves or enjoying a local drink at the small beach bar that sometimes opens on Sundays.
Tip: The road to Lac Cai is a bumpy dirt track, but the peaceful setting and beautiful scenery make the adventure worth it.
Mangrove and National Marine Park
You are literally in the mangroves: the lagoon and surrounding mangrove forest are part of the Bonaire National Marine Park and are internationally recognized as an important natural area (RAMSAR site) because of their ecological value. The mangroves serve as a nursery for many marine animals and play a crucial role in the ecosystem.
Queen Conch Shells
On the beach, you will often see large piles of empty queen conch shells. This large sea snail was heavily harvested in the past, but due to overfishing its population has declined dramatically and it is now a protected species; it is strictly forbidden to catch or take conch. There are even projects underway to release young conch back into the bay to help restore the species.
Navigation
The road to Lac Cai starts along Kaminda Sorobon heading toward Sorobon, where you need to turn left onto Kaminda Lac, just before Red Palm Village. Once on Kaminda Lac, it’s a straight road, but be aware that it is quite bumpy.
