Karpata Manor
Karpata Manor is a historic estate on the north coast of Bonaire, just outside Rincon. It was built around 1870 and was part of a plantation that played an important role in the local economy. The plantation raised goats and produced goods such as aloe, charcoal, and dye wood, which were exported by ship to other Caribbean islands.
Today, Karpata Manor stands empty, but it is considered a valuable piece of cultural heritage. There are plans to restore the manor and give it a new social purpose, focusing on history, nature, and sustainability.
The manor tells the story of Bonaire, from its plantation economy and trade to its decline and eventual revaluation. It is called Karpata after a plant that once grew on the property and was used to produce medicinal oil. You can find Karpata near dive site -9 Karpata, on Karpataweg, Bonaire. It serves as a tangible reminder of the past while also offering opportunities for future educational and cultural projects.
